Waves Award
A celebration of the waves, land, and culture, designed to inspire connection with the natural world through water sports, heritage, and environmental stewardship.
Prize Levels
The scheme will have three levels: Mini Mall, Longboard and Scodyn. Participants must complete all criteria at one level before moving on to the next.
Core Elements At All Levels
Water Sports
Take part in at least one water sport (surfing) and demonstrate an improvement in your skills:
Learn sport specific techniques and water safety.
Take part in group sessions to develop teamwork and confidence in the water.
Safety and life saving
Learn rescue techniques (eg assisting swimmers, rescue on board).
Understand rip currents and tides.
Local History and Welsh Heritage
Study local history and learn the Welsh names of coastal features, wildlife, trees and plants
First Aid Training
Complete training tailored to the level
Emphasis on water related injuries
Conservation Work
Contribute to coastal conservation efforts, such as cleaning beaches and planting trees in coastal areas.
Observe and document changes in biodiversity over time.
Levels Requirements
' Foamie ' Preliminary Certificate
Time commitment: 1 session (2.5 hours)
Focus on initial skills in a water sport, introduction to water safety, basic first aid, brief introduction to history and local wildlife.
Complete a small conservation project (eg beach cleaning).'Mini Mal'
Time commitment: 2 sessions of approximately 5 hours
Focus on basic skills in one chosen water sport, introduction to water safety, basic first aid, and initial exploration of local history and wildlife.
Complete a small conservation project (eg, remove invasive plants from a beach area).Longboard
Time commitment: 5 sessions approximately 12.5 hours
Demonstrate progress in a chosen water sport and a deeper understanding of water rescue techniques.
Learning more detailed Welsh heritage topics, such as legends associated with the coast.
Contribute to a medium-sized conservation project, such as planting trees and creating biodiversity diaries.Scadyn
Time commitment: 10 sessions of 25 hours
Continue to demonstrate progress and conduct a water safety/rescue workshop.
Presenting a project that combines Welsh heritage, biodiversity study, and personal reflections.
Contribute to more intensive conservation environmental activities and exploration of wild foods
Celebration and Recognition
Participants who complete each level will receive certificates.
